Reading the Black Library

Selections from our collections are read aloud by invited artists, musicians, students, and community members. During the month of February, selections will be drawn from our new collection of books donated by the historic DuSable High School library. Special guests this month include a spoken word group from the Bronzeville Scholastic Institute and vocalist Kiara Lanier.

Stony Island Story Time

We are partnering with Leading with Literacy (LWL) for a weekly Story Time event for children and families. Join us Saturday afternoon in the Reading Room to hear selections from the Johnson Publishing Company Library and the Dusable High School Holdings.

Leading with Literacy is a community-based reading program started at Glorious Light Church by Pastor Michael Neal. LWL sends male readers throughout Chicago to serve as role models and encourage primary school students to explore their creative potential through literacy.

Tony Bowers reads library selections and from his own book, On the Nine, inspired by his experience growing up near 79th St. For this series, invited artists, musicians, students, and community members are encouraged to read from our collections and explore connections with their own life and work. Bowers’ reading will include James Baldwin’s short story Sonny’s Blues. Followed by informal discussion.
