In this screening, we explore the legacy of the black cardiac pioneer, Vivien Thomas (1910–1985). Originally hired to be a janitor at Vanderbilt University, Thomas trailblazes beyond societal expectations for Black folks in the 1930s and pioneered modern heart surgery, alongside white surgeon Alfred Blalock (1899–1964).
