Work on the Sabbath

Yaw Agyeman’s residency with Rebuild Foundation continues. During Yaw’s time with Rebuild, he activated the Listening House and Dr. Wax record collections by reflecting on his musical journey. Yaw describes his research as an attempt to locate his “musical self by listening to my father’s records.” Yaw thinks about the act of listening as a process aligned with the monk practice of meditation.
Yaw’s response to listening culminates in a weekly Sunday service titled “Work on the Sabbath.” He collaborates with a number of artists working in a variety of disciplines: dance, poetry, music, etc. Through this collaborative moment, “a new kind of music will be birthed—one where the voice is tantamount; where it can be celebrated and exploited.”
