TRIBAL ROOTS is a series of classes focused on expanding our connection to African culture through the art of music and movement. There are many characteristics of the African diaspora present throughout traditional art forms in several ethnic identities. For example, African drums in Puerto Rican Bomba, the percussion instruments used in Capoeira, the foot stomping movements found in the Senegalese Boot Dance mirrors the urban footwork dances from the youth of Chicago, and so many other examples. Our teachers have spent decades learning the traditional dances of Brazil, West Africa, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and other art forms from the African Diasporas. The purpose of this series is to explore and examine the identity of African culture and how it relates to us in modern times. We will take journeys into expressions through ourselves and our present society.
CAPOEIRA is an Afro-Brazilian art-form that was born out of enslavement in South America during the 1800s, from the injustices and oppression developed the martial art used to liberate those in slavery. Today, Capoeira has evolved to a beautiful method of expression and self-defense. Capoeira teaches us the rich culture of Africa and Brazil through language, music, dance, traditions, and self-expression. We empower those to find their identity within this discipline, to seek other methods of expression and gain strength through knowledge of self and respect for our community, by returning to our Roots. Please join us in our exploration of mind, body, and spirit as one Tribe!
