Work on the Sabbath featuring The Black Monks of Mississippi and Lawrence Agyei

The Black Monks of Mississippi is an experimental music collaboration founded in 2008 by Theaster Gates. The Black Monks are an order of musicians and singers who temporarily submit themselves to ideals of musical restraint and semi-strict adherence to the blues form.

Lawrence Agyei is a Chicago-based photographer who’s work mainly deals with portraiture.  His work has been featured in the British based magazine, Signatures, and he has been recognized by and collaborated with the photography innovators VSCO on numerous occasions.

The Monks will perform an improvised score to Law Agyei’s images of blackness, while Law offers context to his work and his story through performed text.

Work on the Sabbath is a weekly Sunday Service featuring the work of former Rebuild Foundation artist-in-residence, Yaw Agyeman, and special guests. Work on the Sabbath seeks to create an experience of healing and community through the practice of listening and space sharing.
