Arts Bank Cinema: Ganja & Hess (R)

Written and directed by Bill Gunn, the cult classic, Ganja & Hess is a legendary meditation on Blackness, addiction, and cultural extinction, told through the genre of experimental horror.

Ganja & Hess speaks to the Blaxploitation era of the early 1970s without falling into all of the conventional traps. The film trails the life of anthropologist Dr. Hess Green after he transforms into a vampire when stabbed by an ancient African knife. Hess must navigate his lust for the beautiful and outspoken Ganja, as well as his lust for blood.

Following the feature film, a discussion about Ganja & Hess, the overlooked career of Bill Gunn, and Blaxploitation will be held. The Arts Bank’s Johnson Lounge will open at 7pm with a concession bar and a soulful 70s’ set.
